Mechanical Designer- 619325 PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE: The Product Design Department is responsible for the specification, design, development and testing of the on-line inspection vehicles, on and off board systems and ass! ociated handling and test equipment. He/she must work under the guidance of the Design Engineers in order to find, engineer and detail solutions to complex mechanical and electronic design and development problems in restricted timescales, within tight budgetary constraints. The solutions must be able to work first time with a high degree of reliability. KEY ACCOUNTABLITIES: · To produce layouts, detailed design schemes and engineering drawings that fully define the product to be manufactured. · Define part tolerances and validate assembly interference and fit-up. · To recommend and choose proprietary components and materials as necessary to achieve project deliverables. · To produce design solutions to comple! x electro mechanical problems that consider standardisation, v! alue eng ineering, maintainability and meet project timescales and budgets. · To ensure that all documentation produced for each project undertaken fully defines the equipment to be manufactured and it's performance. · A full understanding of appropriate materials, surface finishes, 'fits and tolerances' is essential to ensure optimal and cost effective solutions are implemented. · To lead, supervise and control design projects conducted external to PII. · To produce basic design calculations, plans and estimates where necessary. · To plan and conduct small-scale design verification test work. Examples of Key Results: 1. Design and develop products, which satisfy the customer's technical requirements and meet both timescales and budgetary constraints. 2. Supervise design projects, which utilise external draughting resources. 3. Dev! elop standards and practices to be adopted for both internal and external design projects. 4. Development of test skills. CORE COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Technical: The candidate should be able to demonstrate leadership abilities via the control of multi disciplinary project work and the coordination of the workload. The candidate should possess the necessary technical skills to produce basic design calculations in providing solutions to engineering problems. A broad knowledge of the technical aspects of pipeline inspection equipment and support equipment. A sound background of both practical and technical experience that can be applied to solve engineering problems and plan and conduct small scale development test work. Behavioural: The candidate should be flexible and able to work with minimum supervision on multiple projects under his/her control utilising resources from both inside and outside of PII. Good communication skills are considered essential ! to this post, as is the ability to plan and produce estimates for projects.
