Any mention of his boss leaves a bad taste in Brandon’s mouth. He has virtually started avoiding any kind of interaction with him. In the last five years, Brandon has never had such an antipathy towards his boss. After all, not owning responsibilities for anything gone wrong and passing the buck to his subordinates, is a new trait that his boss had picked up. And knowing that he can’t do anything had left Brandon frustrated.

His boss is never there to clarify doubts, rarely turns up for scheduled meetings, doesn’t stand up for his people when they need him the most. Now, when a major project has failed, the boss has again cut his way out of the mess blaming everybody else. Such irresponsible behaviour by the bosses may not always be reported, however, it is certainly not rare. Some tips may help:

Insecurity weakens

Insecure boss generally find it difficult to face situations. That could be one of the reasons why he react the way he does in Brandon’s case. That often reflects in his interaction . And it’s mostly the subordinates who fall prey to his designs.

Organisation must have processes in place to keep an eye on deviant bosses. 

Confront the boss

If it’s an one off incident you may ignore, but its recurrence should make you wary. You need to convey in subtle ways that you are not game for it. If he gets the message, well and good.

"If that doesn’t work, talk to him, tell him what went wrong and you were not at fault," says Perotsystems HR APAC head Pallab Bandyopadhyay. "You have to let him know that he can’t continue with it, but be tactful." You can take your peers into confidence. 

Stay with facts

Facts always help. Collect your evidences before you confront your boss. List out all the incidents, the cause, and the people accountable. This will help establishing the fault and pin-point the responsibility. Don’t forget to record the sequence of events. So when your team leader gets back at you, you can show him how correct you are, both in fact and logic.

Avoid being offensive, be plain convincing. How you communicate will determine the outcome. 

Decide what’s good for you

If things get worse, you may like to reach out to his superiors, but that should be the last resort.

Any organisation that doesn’t give a patient hearing may not deserve a competent professional.

ICICI shows door to 1,000 for 'poor show'

NEW DELHI: India's largest private sector bank, ICICI Bank, is cutting around 1,000 jobs at different levels. While the company insists that only the poor performers have been asked to leave, sources say the job cut is part of company’s attempt at cutting cost, mainly in segments such as retail and rural and agri-credit.

“There is nothing unusual happening this year. We have been following this HR practice for the past 12 years, wherein those faring poorly in our appraisal system are advised that they wouldn’t get an increment or bonus or good assignment. Then they are given a choice to either look for a job or continue without complaining about the current job,” says HR head K Ram Kumar, adding that this couldn’t be called retrenchment. “We will be hiring 2,500 people at entry-level in the next 90 days,” he added.

Under the ICICI Bank’s appraisal policy, around 5% are rated the worst performers. This year, Mr Ram said the number is around 1,000 or 2.5-3% of the total workforce of 40,000. The worst performers are from all business segments and levels, Mr Kumar said, adding that the segments not performing well are likely to have more of them. It is also learnt that the bank has delayed the joining of those who were offered jobs through campus placement.

At least some recruits, who were offered jobs in February this year, are yet to join as the bank has postponed their joining dates. “We have never reneged on our offer. If their joining has been postponed, it must be something related to logistics and they will be joining us soon,” Mr Kumar said.

It is learnt that majority of the job cuts are likely to happen in the retail business. ICICI Bank has, of late, been shifting focus from retail to corporate business. The bank recently said it expected to grow its corporate business at least by 35%in retail.

It said its retail business grew at 30-35% for the past 5-6 years and was likely to slowdown now, in line with the industry, mainly due to high base, high interest rate and high real estate prices. The retail business had so far been the mainstay of ICICI Bank, comprising almost 58% of its total loans and advances. Corporate and international business together comprise 32% while the balance is on account of debt to SMEs and agriculture.

Income tax benefits of EMI on home loans

Very often tax payers take loans either for the purpose of buying a house or a flat or a car or for some other personal purposes. They are required to pay equated monthly instalments (EMI) of interest and principal.

In some cases both the interest and principal are deductible for purposes of income tax and in some cases it is not so deductible. Hence in this article we have discussed the benefits of EMI under the Income Tax Act mainly in relation to home loans. The section in this article pertains to the Income Tax Act, 1961.

House should be ready for occupation:

One of the most important aspects to be remembered by a tax payer is that the house or flat must be complete. If the house is not ready or is still under construction, then no deduction either on principal or interest would be allowable and permissible under the Income Tax Act.

Bifurcate EMI into Interest and Loan:

The next important aspect to be remembered by a tax payer is to bifurcate EMI into two parts. They are (i) Interest and (ii) Principal. This is because the deduction of interest as well as principal is governed by different sections of Income Tax Act. Therefore, this is the most important aspect to be remembered by a tax payer.

Interest on home loan for acquisition and repairs:

Under the provisions of Section 24, a deduction of a maximum of Rs 1,50,000 every year is permissible in respect of interest on home loan if the house is self-occupied. A loss up to Rs 1,50,000 of interest can be adjusted against salary income or business income or income from other sources. If a person has taken a loan for repair of house or flat, a deduction of maximum amount of Rs 30,000 is permissible and that too within the said amount of Rs 1,50,000.

Full interest deductible on let-out house:

If the house is let out by the tax payer, then the entire interest irrespective of the amount is fully deductible under Section 24 against income from House Property. In case the interest amount is more than the net rent, the loss under the heading "Income from House Property" can be adjusted against other income. It can even be carried forward in the future years

EMI instalment for acquisition also deductible:

Under the provisions of Section 80C the amount of EMI pertaining to the payment of principal for acquiring the house is allowable within the overall limit of Rs 1,00,000. This is for the purpose of acquiring a house through DDA or other housing board like HUDA or any other housing authority. The overall limit in this case is Rs 1,00,000.

Repayment of loan deductible:

Under the provisions of Section 80C (2) (xviii) deduction up to Rs 1,00,000 in respect of repayment of loan is permissible. The repayment of the amount borrowed for home loan by the assessee is deductible only if it is from Central Government or any State Government, or any bank, including co-operative bank, or the LIC, or the NHB, or a Public Sector Company providing housing finance, or any co-operative society providing housing finance or where the employer is an authority or a Board or a Corporation or any other statutory body or the employer is a Public Company or public sector company or a university or an affiliated Central Government or a local authority or a co-operative society.

Besides, stamp duty, registration fee and other expenses for the purpose of transfer of such housing property to the assessee is also deductible under Section 80C.

She suspected something serious until the time when her doctor told her she had “occupational asthma” , related to her workplace. Now if you have an allergy to prawns, you stop eating them. You are allergic to pollen, you stop going near flowers. But what if you are allergic to your work like Smita? What options do you have? You cannot just stop going to work, can you? Read on to know the potential work allergies and what precautions you can take to avoid them.

Learning the basics

Basically there is confusion between allergic reactions and allergic sensitivity.

An allergic reaction is an over-reaction of the immune system that causes anything from rash and itching to a life-threatening condition anaphylactic shock, which develops after repeated exposure. An allergy can kill. Allergic sensitivity on the other hand is when you are allergic to a specific allergen for instance pollen, dust, perfume or any non-specific irritant, which can make you feel miserable. Both these terms are, however used interchangeably. ‘sick building syndrome’

Modern office buildings today are all tall with several cubicles and cabins , which may be filled with allergens and irritants. Chemical residues from carpet cleaning chemicals lurk around; mold spores may be circulating in the continually running moist air conditioners. These allergens can surely trouble your sensitive noses. The photocopy machines and papers too may emit allergic substances.

Experts call this as the “Sick building syndrome” that causes environmental allergies in closed spaces. According to researchers at Public Health department of University College London and Singapore, however, sick building syndrome may be a stress related disorder, rather than a fault of the building or workplace.

The chemical formaldehyde is present in rugs, upholstered furniture, wallpaper, draperies, paint, cigarette smoke. It can cause cough, cold, sneezing, wheezing, sore nasal passage, flu-like symptoms, asthma, irritated throat or watery eyes. Poor air quality due to poor ventilation.

Toxic gases including formaldehyde lurk around your computers and desks causing respiratory illnesses. Health care workers at the hospitals so also cafeteria workers are at a risk of allergies from powdered latex gloves. The powder is the culprit, which has several allergens or allergy triggers.

People working at food processing factories are at a risk of several potential allergens. One of them is peanut products, which can be allergic to some. Dust mites and other small insects are allergen carriers. Places where pesticides are not used, this can be a cause for allergy Pets and laboratory animals can give rise to allergies.


Veterinarians dealing with pets are prone to allergies arising from the fine hair covering the animals, urine and faeces Pungent room freshener or a specific perfume are common irritants that give headache and cause sneezing Bakery workers working with flour and grains can develop allergies because of the husk and the dusty granules of flour Beauty parlour workers are at a risk of allergies from the constant use of hair dyes, chemicals for hair perms or nail polish removers.

Act now

Discover and identify the source of allergy Wash your hands before or after doing something or going somewhere. Wear a protective mask if there is a need. Use a damp cloth to remove dust from your desk. Keep your desk clean and uncluttered. Keep the piles of paper, books, files properly Wipe clean your computer, keyboard, mouse etc.

Keep them dust-free. Improved air-quality and air circulation can help reduce symptoms Work in a smoke-free environment. If you cannot escape the exposure to workplace allergens , consider changing your job. This could be the ultimate option.

I think we should have job reservations in all the fields. I completely  support the PM and all the politicians for promoting this. Let's start the  reservation with our cricket team. We should have 10 percent reservation  for Muslims. 30 percent for OBC , SC /ST like that. Cricket rules should be  modified accordingly.
The boundary circle should be reduced for an SC/ST player. The four hit by  an OBC player should be considered as a six and a six hit by an OBC player  should be counted as 8 runs. An OBC player scoring 60 runs should be  declared as a century.
We should influence ICC and make rules so that the pace bowlers like  Shoaib Akhtar should not bowl fast balls to our OBC player.
Bowlers should bowl maximum speed of 80 km/ hour to an OBC player.
Any delivery above this speed should be made illegal.
Also we should have reservation in Olympics. In the 100 meters race, an  OBC player should be given a gold medal if he runs 80 meters.
There can be reservation in Government jobs also. Let's recruit SC/ST and  OBC pilots for aircrafts which are carrying the ministers and politicians  (that can really help the country...)
Ensure that only SC/ST and OBC doctors do the operations for the ministers  and other politicians. (Another way of saving the country...)

1. You should get refund order normally within 6 months of end of assessment year of the I.T. return. For financial year 2007-2008         [ income from 1-4-07 to 31-03-08] assessment year [AY]will be 2008-09 and normally you should get refund latest by 30-09-09. This will depend on efficiency of your income tax dept and date of your filing return.


2. If you do not get refund as above submit by regd. ad post letter as per annexure A. with its enclosures.


3. If no refund or reply is received within 30 days, file RTI application as per annexure B. Enclose IPO for Rs.10/- in the name of Accounts Officer, Income Tax Dept, Govt of India and made payable at the place of submission of RTI application. IPO is available at near-by post office. Also enclose photocopy of annexture A and its enclosures.


4. If no action is taken within 35-40 days of mailing RTI application, file first appeal.


5. In case if you do not get reply/refund within next 35-40 days, contact local RTI activists for preferring second and final appeal to Central Information Commission, New Delhi.


6. Avoid visiting Income Tax Office. You may waste time, money and energy and will have unpleasant experience of govt. office ! Deal through regd/speed ad post. Avoid courier service.


 7. Retain photocopy of all papers sent to IT Dept. for future reference.


8. Concerned Income Tax Officer is the CPIO of the ward.


9. You can visit for guidance.

 Our experience shows that in most of the cases, only RTI application or indication that RTI application will follow, yields the result.


Your follow-up as above will benefit you and also improve the system of the dept so that other assesses will also get refunds in time.
