Key Responsibilities
The primary functions of this position include project management, client management, and team leadership. The Sr. Associate, Program Management is expected to play a variety of project support and team leadership roles while developing the skills and experience necessary to become a Manager, Program Management. The most typical project roles for the Sr. Associate, Program Management are Track Lead (TL), which usually consists of leading sub-tracks of work (3-8 people) as part of a larger project, and Assistant Project Manager (APM), which entails supporting project managers with day-to-day project leadership activities.

The Sr. Associate, Program Management position requires problem solvin! g skills, solid verbal and written communication skills, basic project management and client management skills, team leadership skills and strong organizational and detail-orientation skills. In performing the essential functions of this role, the work environment is fast-paced, moderately noisy and team-based. Additionally, frequent overnight travel is required.

Key Responsibilities include:

· Assists Project Managers with day-to-day project management tasks or leads small and mid-sized tracks/projects. Develops and tracks project plans for individual tracks of work (as part of a larger project plan).

· Establishes and maintains communications for project track. Oversees track estimations. Oversees the development of track deliverables. Establishes and maintains processes to manage scope of work for track.

· Identifies and manages track issues and risks. Communicat! es track status, risks and issues to project leadership.

& middot; Leads teams of 3-8 individuals. Provides purpose, direction and motivation to team. Clarifies and communicates track objectives and success criteria. Ensures key track roles and responsibilities are defined.

· Ensures a positive, collaborative working environment for the team. Manages third-party partner and/or vendor relationships, as necessary.

· Assists Project Managers in managing client relationships and preparing for client meetings. Plans and executes client workshops. Develops relationships with appropriate client stakeholders.

· Provides day-to-day contact for client on track related communications.

· Participates in, and assists with, company events such as hiring, training and internal initiatives. Contributes to the ongoing development of the Program Management Domain and community at Sapient.

· Actively shares knowledge and lessons learned from project experien! ces.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor"s degree required; 2-3 years project management experience, preferably in a client-service organization; Demonstrated leadership capability and/or potential (prior leadership experience with teams of 3 or more people preferred); Knowledge of and/or experience in software development and internet industries preferred; Ability to effectively work with project teams and clients; Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Project; knowledge of Visio

Hydropower & Irrigation Projects

Larsen & Toubro is India's leading technology, engineering, and construction and manufacturing company with a track record of projects in India and overseas, and a group turnover exceeding Rs.24000 crore. Its Engineering Construction & Contracts Division (ECC) has staff strength of over 13000 spread over project sites in India and abroad.

To conquer future challenges, ECC is developing a Design Unit for Hydro Projects located in its Engineering Design & Research Centre (EDRC) at Faridabad near Delhi. Here, engineers will work on hydropower and irrigation projects from concept to commissioning. Operations will include PFR (Pre-Feasibility Reports, DPR (Detailed Project Reports), and basic and detailed engineering during execution. EDRC also works with leading international design agencies on L&T's various EPC and IPP hydropower and irrigation projects. To execute these expansion plans, EDRC at Faridabad requires experienced manpower specialised in the following areas covering hydropower and irrigation projects:

1. Design Engineers specializing in designs for overall hydropower plants, structures (civil & hydro-mechanical
works), electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical equipment, geo-technical and rock-mechanics systems,
hydraulics & hydrology, mechanical & electrical systems, etc.

2. Engineers -- EPC Project Co-ordination

3. Engineers - Business Development, Tendering & Costing

The Product Design Department is responsible for the specification, design, development and testing of the on-line inspection vehicles, on and off board systems and ass! ociated handling and test equipment.

He/she must work under the guidance of the Design Engineers in order to find, engineer and detail solutions to complex mechanical and electronic design and development problems in restricted timescales, within tight budgetary constraints. The solutions must be able to work first time with a high degree of reliability.


· To produce layouts, detailed design schemes and engineering drawings that fully define the product to be manufactured.

· Define part tolerances and validate assembly interference and fit-up.

· To recommend and choose proprietary components and materials as necessary to achieve project deliverables.

· To produce design solutions to comple! x electro mechanical problems that consider standardisation, v! alue eng ineering, maintainability and meet project timescales and budgets.

· To ensure that all documentation produced for each project undertaken fully defines the equipment to be manufactured and it's performance.

· A full understanding of appropriate materials, surface finishes, 'fits and tolerances' is essential to ensure optimal and cost effective solutions are implemented.

· To lead, supervise and control design projects conducted external to PII.

· To produce basic design calculations, plans and estimates where necessary.

· To plan and conduct small-scale design verification test work.

Examples of Key Results:

1. Design and develop products, which satisfy the customer's technical requirements and meet both timescales and budgetary constraints.

2. Supervise design projects, which utilise external draughting resources.

3. Dev! elop standards and practices to be adopted for both internal and external design projects.

4. Development of test skills.


An experienced Designer/Design Draughtsman with 1 to 7yrs familiar with Autocad, Pro-Engineer, 3D CAD and manual draughting techniques is required for this post.

The candidate should be able to demonstrate leadership abilities via the control of multi disciplinary project work and the coordination of the workload.

The candidate should possess the necessary technical skills to produce basic design calculations in providing solutions to engineering problems.

A broad knowledge of the technical aspects of pipeline inspection equipment and support equipment.

A sound background of both practical and technical experience that can be applied to solve engineering problems and plan and conduct small scale development test work.


The candidate should be flexible and able to work with minimum supervision on multiple projects under his/her control utilising resources from both inside and outside of PII.

Good communication skills are considered essential ! to this post, as is the ability to plan and produce estimates for projects.

Ability to use both past experience and technical knowledge to achieve solutions to complex problems to an agreed budget and timescale

Appraisal: KRAs bring performance into perspective

BANGALORE: With salaries sky rocketing and employees earning never-before perks, HR departments are having a tough time as a new thinking has begun to unfold across organisations. Employees know what they are worth— both within the organisation and outside. So they are willing to jump the ship at the slightest hint of an increase in compensation.

Consider this: as soon as an employee shifts to a new organisation, the sense of increased value disappears. Clearly, "value" is not something that is recognised by employees for long. It is a short, transient emotion, easily overridden by other considerations.

Why does this happen? Why do employees not see their value being the same for any reasonable period of time? Is it because they don't measure their value against anything other than what the market has to offer? There is only one thing that differentiates employees from one another. It is the manner in which they deliver work. There are employees who spend hours at work, but not really contribute anything towards the company.

During appraisals, this employee expects a fairly large hike in compensation for the hours spent at the workplace and not for the actual work put in. This is where a transparent appraisal system becomes effective. It helps the employee and employer discuss and evaluate the performance in an open and orderly fashion. This is when the employee is able to equate her sense of value to compensation.

The very first step is to design a system which should be simple and easy for everyone to understand. It should make use of simple visual aids which help the employee understand how they need to evaluate themselves. One can conduct short workshops or use the company's intranet to communicate the process. E-mails and SMS are some quicker ways of making people aware of the appraisal process.

This appraisal process should define how an employee is to grade her work based on KRAs (key result areas) set at the beginning of the quarter or the year. Employees must be able to judge for themselves as to how they have fared against those KRAs. Spending long hours, without meeting your KRAs does not and will not amount to excellent performance. Such an appraisal system brings performance into perspective.

It clearly brings out tasks that need to be done to meet company goals. If these tasks are done well, the employee will see how she has helped contribute to the company and can negotiate a higher compensation. But clearly, the compensation will not be equated with the amount of time spent at office or on the field.

Developing a KRA-oriented evaluation process is only half the battle. There still lies the issue of implementing the process and keeping employees informed of the process. In case the communication from the HR team is not effective, we could end up with people being unhappy with the increase in compensation they receive. Normally, the only direct contact an employee makes with the appraisal process is during self-evaluation and feedback (from the reporting manager ).

Employees are generally kept in the dark as to what goes on in the background. The onus falls on the HR team to inform the employee on how the appraisal process will measure performance. This helps create transparency. The employee to whom the process has been explained is aware of where he/ she is headed. Transparency creates a higher level of acceptance into the appraisal process.

Developing an effective process would be a futile exercise unless it is implemented. While I do agree that there would be a few people unhappy with the compensation received, I am sure that the majority would know what the company expects from them in future. This would result in better performances. A system that lays all cards on the table for the employees to see, leaving no doubts in the employees' mind, is the winning system.


Explain company goals and objectives to employees

Set key result areas (KRAs) early enough in the year

Ensure that KRAs are understood by the employees in relation to company goals

See that measurable yardsticks are created & explained at the time of implementing the KRAs

Both the employee and employer should feel that the KRAs are fair, clear and measurable

Both employee and employer must agree on the terms of the metrics used to measure KRAs

Ensure that KRAs are not changed too frequently
