If you are straight out of college with a professional degree in hand, joining a start-up firm would be the last thing on your mind. And at that point of time, all you can think about is getting into the pay roll of leading firms as soon as possible. Not anymore! There was a time when people would not consider stepping into a new venture. However, with the changing times, more and more people are starting businesses on their own, including out of college professionals. And industry experts say that today, these professionals are no longer hesitant to work in start-up organisations, as they consider these organisations to be challenging, innovative and interesting.
Starting Through
New firms are mushrooming day by day, providing various unique and innovative products and services. “Professionals who are experienced and willing to accept high responsibilities and challenges go ahead and take the initiative of starting a firm. The scope of using their skills and knowledge to various spheres are high, therefore they get higher job satisfaction. Hence the trend of starting small organisations is increasing,” believes Yeshasvini Ramaswamy, Director, e2e People Practices.
According to Kiran Konduri, Co-founder, asklaila.com, “The fear of failure is no more a big issue. People believe that even if you fail in an entrepreneurial venture, you can get a job in any other organisation. Hence, the number of people who are willing to give it a try is on the rise.”
And unlike the past, professionals are no longer hesitant to take up a career in a start-up. “There is more awareness about start-ups and the kind of unique work they are doing,” opines Vijaya Verma, Founder and CEO, Yos Technologies, a start up in the healthcare IT domain.
Rewarding Experience
“Newcomers who are interested in getting into new domains and technologies are eager to join such companies. Even if larger companies offer similar work, since the teams in start-ups are smaller and more focused, there is a lot of scope for interactions with seniors and quick learning for these newcomers. Also, they know that even if a start-up does not succeed, it is not going to reflect badly on their careers, since the experience they have gained in such companies will give them an edge in their new jobs,” adds Verma.
Experts say that another advantage of a start up firm is the ownership it provides. “You might not be the founder, but you are very close. Also with a smaller team, each person in the company has more say. Professionals have more opportunity to voice your opinion and influence key decisions,” says Ramaswamy.
Adding to it, Verma says, “Apart from learning opportunities, people like to join start-ups because they can grow faster in a smaller team, their contributions are more visible, and hence better rewarded. The environment in a start-up is vibrant and energising, and encourages innovation and independent thinking.”
War for talent
A change in the mindset of people towards a startup is happening gradually and they are given more recognition and importance. However, there are many issues that a start-up needs to address to gain an upper hand. Apart from the challenges of getting adequate funding, competition from the prominent organisation etc., one of the biggest problems faced by them is to get quality talent. Though many are willing to join start-up firms today, the percentage is not enough. According to Verma, “There is the issue of the image of the company, even if the professionals are fine with joining start-ups, there is social pressure from parents and peers who still believe in bigger names, stability etc.”
Though the requirement of employees in start-ups as per numbers is very less, the quality expected is very high. As experts say the work done by a team of five in a bigger organisation, might have to be handled by a single or two in a start-up. For example, asklaila.com has employees less than 40 people in the organisation and the work they do is similar to that of any other popular search service.
“Start-ups need to be much more stringent in their hiring process, because they don’t have the luxury of making hiring mistakes, and having non-performers in a small team. They also need to have people with the right attitude. Pride, passion and perseverance are three factors that are the key to the success of any start-up, and this is not easy to find in the market. This makes the whole process of getting talent much tougher as compared to larger organisations,” explains Verma.
Another major factor that is stopping professionals from joining a smaller organisation is the compensation offered. Even though the salaries offered by start ups are reasonable, when comparing to the multi-nationals and established firms, it is less.
Given the importance of a brand name, now startups are also keen on creating a brand name and brand recall. Many firms prefer online tools like blogs, social networking sites etc. for brand building.
Despite the challenges, there are many who opt for a job at a start-up, as they create plenty of opportunities for creative people and it gives a platform for ideas to be heard and implemented. Even though working for a small firm means a smaller salary in the initials days, employees can enjoy a financial success along with the growth of the company. As the start up firms are booming day by day, more opportunities are on offer and the war for quality talent is going to intensify.
So if you are one of the many who has just finished your professional course and are waiting to get a good job, don’t turn your back on a start-up firm as they just might be your gateway to success.

Gone are the days when some dads would get back to their workplaces to escape endless diaper changes. The Gen X dad thinks otherwise. And several employers, in an endeavor to accommodate their male employees’ needs, believe in introducing a ‘paternity leave’ policy, finds out Viren Naidu
PATERNAL NEEDS
“I believe that today we operate in an environment where it is imperative to keep pace with the ever-changing social demands. Hence, it’s crucial for companies to adopt progressive people policies like ‘paternity leave’, and consider the many societal factors that necessitate the need of implementing such a practice,” says Sudheesh Venkatesh, Head - HR, Tesco Hindustan Service Centre (HSC). This year, at Tesco HSC, 60 employees have already availed the benefit of this policy, which entitles a male employee a leave of five days. This benefit is restricted to a maximum of two children only. And in cases where employees have opted for adoption, this policy can still be availed. “Introducing such a policy has several positive implications. It helps in building emotional loyalty with the staff and christens the company as an ‘employer of choice’,” adds Venkatesh. Mini Khanna Chaudhuri, Head-HR, India Business, Microland adds, “Today, we are observing trends where nuclear families and working couples are on the rise and are centered in cities, away from senior members of the family. More and more young couples are having children in their place of stay, without their family members around, for support, thus making it imperative for fathers too, to contribute towards the baby’s well-being,” says Chaudhuri. At Microland, a paternity leave of five days is given to the male employee that can be used anytime, within three months of the child’s birth. Microland pays for all benefits during the leave period of the male employee.
PATERNAL INSTINCTS
Ranvir Sikand (name changed) didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity of spending every single moment with his child, when his bundle of joy was born. For him, spending a few hours with his newborn before and after work just wasn’t good enough. Luckily for Sikand, his employer, Synygy India Pvt Ltd. was supportive and let him work from home for two days in a week so as to enable him to take care of his newborn baby. When Vikram Jha’s (name changed) spouse gave birth to premature twins, he was allowed to take a month’s leave to take care of his personal responsibilities, by Synygy. “Many companies in the West and even in India have provisions for paternity leave. However, what is more important is that, irrespective of classification of leave, a father should be given leave of absence, as necessary, on such a great occasion in his life. On the part of the company, this has to be within the overall annual leave entitlements’ policy. The objective, for an organisation is not so much to keep giving leaves under various occasions, but to spare the employee at the right time and occasion, depending on the joy or solemnity of the occasion,” says S K Dutt, Head - Group HR, ABG Group of Companies. At Infosys BPO, around 111 employees, last year, have availed this benefit. Paid leaves are only for five days, at Infosys BPO, and for the remaining days, the employee will be availing earned leaves in case he is unable to join work.
At Synygy, in case of emergency, the father of a newborn can increase his leave or make use of the flexibility options, by either working half days or working from home. The employee is also eligible for an Rs.25, 000 allowance, which is paid after child’s birth to reimburse any medical or miscellaneous expenses that may arise. In cases where the employee is not able to rejoin work within the estimated time frame, he is allowed to work from home or with his mentor’s pre-approval allowed to change his work timings.
PATERNAL BLISS
IBM provides paternity leaves to all its male employees, irrespective of their designation/position in the hierarchy ladder /time spent in the organisation etc. The ‘IBM Paternity Leave Policy’ entitles male employees to avail their leaves within 120 days of the birth/adoption of their child. Employees can avail paternity leave up to a maximum of five days and it should be taken as a single block and cannot be broken down into parts. Committed to creating a flexible work environment, IBM provides employees with a variety of flexibility options and these options are available to male employees too, who after serving their paternity leave period are looking for greater flexibility. The ones who want to spend more time with his child/wife or need to address certain health issues pertaining to them or if he has triplets to take care of, the gratitude of the right employer can do wonders! Here are a few steps adopted by IBM: 1) Individualised work schedule: Employees in consultation with their respective managers can work out a special working hour schedule, 2) Telecommuting: The employee utilising this option is on the move, uses shared IBM workspace such as visitor centers, and does not have a dedicated desk, 3) Work-athome: Employees can perform their regular work schedule at home, 4) Leave of absence: This is to provide the employee with the option of being absent from work, without salary, for a period of time in order to manage a personal situation.
So when will men start getting three months’ paternity leave? It will certainly even things up, right? But organisations believe in taking one step at a time and male employees too, aren’t complaining.
